How to Draw Attention to a Terrible Wrong

July 21, 2025 by Scott Meyer

NOTE: Patreon subscribers receive a commentary with each comic. In this case, I am including the commentary on my site as well, both as a sort of advertisement and because I feel a need to explain myself.

This is maybe one of those comics I did just for me. I hope you enjoyed it too, but really, it is just four panels of me reveling in my own geekery. But come on! Look at the guy’s IMDb page: It’s bonkers!

A few other notable projects he has appeared in:

Game of Thrones

Troy

Willow

The Crown

Blake’s 7

Magnum P.I.

Lovejoy … YES! FRIGGIN’ LOVEJOY!

Lately, I’m sort of liking the idea of giving people like him some appreciation while they’re still here to enjoy it. I would love to see an effort made to get him in to play some sort of antagonist (even if it’s only in one scene or voice work) in Star Trek, the MCU, the DCU, and the Orville.

I’m also not kidding about his awful costume on Space: 1999.  When I was a kid, Space: 1999 toys and merch were available, but it didn’t run on any of the Yakima stations, so I never got the chance to actually see the show. I could only imagine it. Lately, I’ve been working my way through the series, and let me tell you, the show itself is not great, but the making fun of it afterward on the phone to Ric is fantastic. Just last night, I watched Martin Landau passionately argue with three trees. Not puppet trees. Not guys in tree costumes. Just trees!

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Julian Glover’s costume. It was awful, but not the worst on the show. I really do feel like part of the show’s goal was to knock dignified actors down a peg.

Here’s how they treated Peter Cushing, Brian Blessed, Leo McKern, and Christopher Lee.

How to Make a Bold Fashion Choice

May 02, 2022 by Scott Meyer

I have been creating new comics for about two months now, and posting them for about a month. I am thrilled and delighted with the enthusiasm of the response I’ve received, and shocked at the realization of how much effort the strip requires. (Imagine how much worse it would be if I actually drew new pictures for the damned thing!)

I have taken the advice of several readers and started a Patreon for Basic Instructions.

https://www.patreon.com/basicinstructions

It has one tier, with a suggested fee of $3.00 a month. Joining the Patreon is a way of letting me know that you want me to keep making strips, helping me cover my overhead, and compensating me for my efforts. (Yes, “efforts.” I make more than one effort.)

How to Embrace Progress

March 25, 2022 by Scott Meyer

It is an interesting paradox. You create a product that’s sole reason for existing is to take up space in packages, then you must ship it all over the world from your factory. Logically, there must be trucks, boxcars, and shipping containers traveling all over the world, transporting nothing but brand-new packing peanuts and rolls of bubble wrap.

That must be a fairly low-stress run for a trucker. No need to worry about the shipment getting damaged, and the fuel costs have to be lower than usual. It also would be a real kick in the pants for any hijacker who steals the shipment looking for stuff they can sell.

How to Recognize an Opportunity

February 09, 2022 by Scott Meyer

I am on the record as having really enjoyed the movie Tomorrowland. I don’t claim it’s some high-point in western cinema, but it’s an enjoyable fantasy-adventure with a message that resonates for me. Also, George Clooney in old grouch mode is fun. (Some day, he and Brad Pit will star in a remake of Grumpy Old Men. An entire generation will groan in despair when they see the first trailer, but they’ll go see the movie.)

I think part of the movie’s problem was that they sold it as a George Clooney action film with a young lady for a sidekick, but then the movie turned out to be two young ladies on an adventure with George Clooney as an Obi Wan figure.

Anyway, it’s on Disney+ now, so if you believe that the future can still be great if we just have the gumption to make it great, or if you have a daughter and you’d like her to see some good role models, I suggest you give it a shot.
